![]() …and order one spare drive NOW for when a drive fails, so you have identical hardware.įor your purposes, the spinning disks in a RAID configuration should be fast enough for 8-10 users. RAID 6 setup does double parity (safer!!) so 6x3tb gives you ~12TB usable storage) RAID 5 gives you 1 parity drive (so 5x3TB gives you ~12TB usable storage) Western Digital “Red” drives are their best spinning disks for SAN use and are reliable & You can either get one of these with drives, or get a ‘bare’ unit and add your own drives. Synology NAS with 8 bays, dual 10G Ethernet ports. I see several others are using a local NAS If anyone has any feedback on this, please share. And that would allow us the possibility of having 1GB network connection or possibly 10GB connection between the NAS, the 1GB/10GB Switch and our desktop network cards?.Ĭan we run the Jetstream Server from NAS? Right now because of the limitation of our Cross-county network and our remote location, the need for good production speed at our desktop, we are investigating this setup in our Working Quad which will then be connected to the Cross-county network at a 100MB connection which will allow the IT folks to have the NAS connected (for security purposes and scanning in OFF-Hours). The problem is that writing to blu ray is slooow and there is limited space. ![]() If you can deal with the hassle, blu ray is best because the data should be safe for 50 years+. but Backblaze did a study and found 4-5 years was the average. ![]() The average lifespan of these drives varies - depending on many factors, including brand, type, storage temperatures etc. I'm pretty sure that a lot of firms will just buy external drives and backup the data to them. If the scan projects are smaller than 100GB, we use blu-ray's, which is my preferred method as the data storage is safer. We use QNAP NAS drives working in RAID for backup of big projects.
